Oral Hygiene & Preventive Dental Care in Plano, TX
Why is Oral Hygiene So Important?
Most adults over 35 lose more teeth to gum disease (periodontal disease) than to cavities — in fact, three out of four adults experience some form of gum disease in their lifetime. The best way to prevent cavities and periodontal problems is through consistent daily brushing and flossing, along with professional care.
Both periodontal disease and tooth decay are caused by bacterial plaque, a colorless film that constantly forms on your teeth at the gum line. Thorough daily brushing and flossing remove these bacteria and help safeguard your dental health.

How to Brush Properly
Dr. Lakhani recommends using a soft to medium toothbrush. Position it at a 45-degree angle where your teeth meet the gums. Gently move the brush in small circular motions, using light pressure to clean the outside surfaces. Then follow the same approach for the inside of your back teeth.
For the inside surfaces of upper and lower front teeth, hold the brush vertically and make gentle back-and-forth strokes. Don’t forget to softly brush the surrounding gum tissue. Finish by cleaning the biting surfaces with short, gentle strokes. Rinse thoroughly to wash away loosened plaque.
If brushing causes discomfort, or if you’d like a personalized demonstration, call our Plano office at (214) 644-0010.
How to Floss Effectively
Gum disease often begins between teeth, where your toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing is the best way to clean these spaces.
01
Use about 18 inches of floss (waxed floss is often easier). Wrap most around the middle finger of one hand and the rest around the other.
02
For upper teeth, hold tightly between thumbs and forefingers. Gently guide it between teeth with a back-and-forth motion, avoiding force. Curve it into a C shape around each tooth and slide below the gum line, cleaning each side.
03
For lower teeth, guide the floss with forefingers.
04
Remember to floss behind the last tooth on each side. As you work, switch to fresh sections of floss.
Your gums may bleed slightly at first — this typically stops as plaque is removed and your gums heal.
Caring for Sensitive Teeth
After certain dental treatments, teeth may feel sensitive to hot or cold. This generally resolves as long as your mouth is kept clean. If sensitivity continues, Dr. Lakhani may recommend a medicated toothpaste or rinse to help.

Choosing the Right Oral Hygiene Products
The choices can be overwhelming. Here’s a guide to help:
- Electric toothbrushes: Devices like Rotadent or Interplak are effective and safe for most patients.
- Oral irrigators: Rinse your mouth but do not replace brushing or flossing.
- Rubber tips & tiny brushes: Useful for massaging gums and cleaning between teeth, but ask us how to use them to avoid injury.
- Fluoride toothpaste & rinses: Used daily, can reduce decay by up to 40%.
- Anti-plaque rinses: Approved by the ADA, help control early gum disease.
(For children under six, avoid fluoride rinses without professional advice.)
Professional Dental Cleanings
Daily brushing and flossing minimize plaque and tartar, but professional dental cleanings in Plano are essential for removing calculus from places your home care can’t reach. Your routine visits at Softtouch Dental and Implant Center are a key part of preventing gum disease and preserving your teeth for life.
